Obituary for Sister Miriam Anthony Carioto, OSF

SISTER MIRIAM ANTHONY (FRANCES MARIE) CARIOTO, OSF

Sister Miriam Anthony (Frances Marie) Carioto went home to God on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, NY. Sister was 89 years of age and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 70 years. Frances Marie was born in Albany, NY to Augustine and Josephine Carioto. She was a member of Our Lady of Angels Parish in Albany, NY and graduated from Academy of the Holy Names High School in Albany. In 1951, Frances entered the Sisters of St. Francis in Syracuse, NY and was invested with the Franciscan habit in 1952, receiving the name of Sister Miriam Anthony.

Sister Miriam Anthony received a Normal Degree and soon after that, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies from Le Moyne College. She also completed an Intensive Program in Educational Administration at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkhill, NY and a National Leadership Workshop at SUNY Plattsburgh, NY.

Her 51 years of ministering to God’s children began at St. Joseph’s School in Utica, NY. After that, only two years were spent in New Brunswick and Riverside, New Jersey. The remainder of her 51 years as a teacher or principal were spent in Syracuse, Cohoes, Utica, East Syracuse and Mattydale, New York. The last 20 of her teaching/principal years were at St. Margaret’s in Mattydale. After that, Sister was an Administrative Assistant in the Community Development Office and also did Community Service as a Receptionist at the Generalate Offices. Lastly, she continued to be of service to God’s people as a prayer minister at the Franciscan Villa.

Sister will be remembered for her smile which brightened the day, her deep love of family and community, her organizational skills, enthusiasm as a principal, her energetic ways, prayerfulness and dedication to the Franciscan Way of Life.

Sister was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Frank (Elfriede) Carioto and Anthony Carioto along with her sister-in-law, Mary Carioto.

She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis, and brother Joseph Carioto, sister-in-law Denise Carioto and several nieces and nephews.

On Tuesday, June 28, 2022, there will be a Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211. Entombment will follow immediately at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, 1389 Central Ave., Colonie, NY 12205.
