Obituary for Sheila M. Knight (Adsit)

Sheila M. (Adsit) Knight, 85 of North Syracuse died on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at home with her family by her side.

Native and life resident of Syracuse, Sheila was the daughter of the late Edwin and Katherine (Mulligan) Adsit.

A proud graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School, Class of 1955, Sheila was a longtime communicant of Assumption Church and formerly St. John the Baptist Church.

Sheila married Donald W. Knight on August 1, 1964, and together they raised their four children on the Northside of Syracuse.

Sheila preached to her children that education was very important and no matter what happens in life, nobody can take your education away from you. With that thought in mind, she saw to it that all of her children were Catholic school educated and they each hold advanced college degrees in their chosen professions.

Sheila was the Vice President of Keegan-Osbelt-Knight Funeral Home, Inc. for over 56 years assisting her late husband and daughter behind the scenes in serving families of the Central New York area. She took great pride in her work and was a driving force in the success of the funeral home. She was a reassuring voice on the phone and where she may have been unseen at the funeral home, her presence was always felt and she is truly missed at 900 North Salina Street.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, attending baseball games and spending time with her family and friends. A member of a long-time BUNCO crew that began in the 1970’s with a group of ladies from St. John the Baptist Academy that met monthly right up until the world shut-down with the pandemic. Sheila treasured her long-time friendships and her friends brightened her days and kept her going these past few years. We would like to thank all of those that reached out to her with a card, a telephone call or a kind word---she appreciated all of your kindnesses and kept you all in her daily rosaries and prayers.

Sheila was a woman of quiet strength, quick wit, a deep Catholic faith and an iron will. Our mother was a caregiver for her entire family. She lovingly took care of her children, her grandchildren, her parents, in-laws, cousin and most especially, her beloved husband.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Sheila enjoyed hearing about all of the adventures of her seven grandchildren and she often remarked that even though she had to wait until her late 60’s to become a grandmother, it was worth the wait! She was very proud of all of their accomplishments and as her illnesses limited her travel to visit them, the kids were always on her mind and in her heart!

Sheila was a woman who “got things done” and she put her own needs aside to take care of everyone else’s before addressing her own concerns. These past few years have been ones of great medical difficulty, but she would proudly proclaim to the many medical professionals who tried to assist her that, “I still have all my buttons” and not to discount her frail appearance as weakness. She battled until the very end, and we will all miss her dearly and are happy that she has been reunited with our father, her parents and her many friends.

Pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Marian Carrol and her beloved husband of 53 years, Donald W. Knight who died on March 25, 2019.
