Obituary for Richard T. "Dick" Blume

Richard T. “Dick” Blume, 71 of Syracuse died suddenly on March 12, 2022.

Born in Syracuse, Dick was the son of the late Donald and Adele (Dobrasko) Blume.

In 1969, Dick graduated from Central Technical High School and continued his education at Onondaga Community College. In 1974, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Photography from the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communication.

Dick was an award-winning Photojournalist for the Syracuse Newspapers for over 42 years retiring in late 2014. During his tenure with the Syracuse Newspapers, he covered breaking news events, high school and college sports, weather and the lives of people throughout the Central New York area.

Dick continued his friendships with his former colleagues/retirees from the Photography Department of the Syracuse Newspaper during his retirement years and he appreciated the comradery that these interactions provided him.

Dick was an avid hiker, skier, biker and longtime member/Board member of both the Onondaga Cycling Club and the Onondaga Ski Club. He enjoyed traveling with these groups and he cherished the many friendships that were made during his “adventures”.

During his retirement years, he continued to take photographs especially of nature with a favorite spot being Beaver Lake Nature Center. Just prior to his sudden death, he had just returned from a two-week, trip of a lifetime photo safari in Tanzania Africa.

He was a kind-hearted, quiet man that appreciated all that was given to him, and he will be missed by many.

Pre-deceased by his parents, Donald and Adele and his infant brother, Paul.

Survived by his sister, Cynthia A. Blume of Syracuse; his fellow Photojournalist, friend and confidant, Ronald (Carolyn) Trinca of Liverpool; his aunt, Leona Dobrasko and several cousins.
