Obituary for Joseph H. "Joe" During Jr.

Joseph H. During, Jr., 73, of Cortland passed away suddenly on January 22, 2021.

He was born September 19, 1947 to Joseph (Bud) and Helen During in North Syracuse.

He attended Powelson Business Institute for two years and began his accounting career with Dermody, Burke & Brown Certified Public Accountants in Syracuse.

He was drafted into the Army in 1967 and was stationed in South Carolina. In August of 1968 he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Hull. He served as an Army Chaplain Assistant for two years and was honorably discharged with a National Defense medal and was recognized as an expert rifleman.

In 1969, he returned to work for DB&B and went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Syracuse University.

In 1984, Joe moved his family to Cortland to open a branch of DB&B where after 32 years, opened his own accounting practice in 2001.

Over the years, Joe volunteered his time and extensive accounting knowledge with various local charities and non-profit organizations. He was an active member of the Mattydale Fire Department from 1971 to 1981 and became an Honorary Member in May of 1981. In 1989, he joined the Cortlandville Fire District where he served as District Treasurer for 7 years, then became a District Commissioner for 6 years. He also served as Department Chaplin for both departments up until his death.

In 2006, he completed his seven-year journey to become an ordained Deacon in the Catholic Church for the Diocese of Syracuse.

When he wasn’t working, he loved to visit Mickey and Minnie in Walt Disney World and was an avid NASCAR fan.

He was predeceased by his parents and both siblings, Charles During and Margaret Myrto.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joyce, his daughters, Mary Ellen (Bill) O’Rand, Patty (Ben) Robbins and Katherine (Ron) Marshall, his grandchildren Julia Marshall, Nicholas Marshall, Taylor Netti, Cassidy Robbins and Emily Robbins, his in-laws, Edward and Marian Hull, several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are Thursday, January 28, 2021 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church in Cortland with a Deacon Vigil Service starting at 7:00 PM at the church, 59 North Main Street, Cortland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be FRIDAY at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church in Cortland.

Burial will be immediately following in St. Mary's Cemetery in Cortland.
