Obituary for Francis A. "Fran" Scharoun

Francis A. “Fran” Scharoun passed away peacefully on February 5, 2022 at the age of 81 with his loving sister Peg by his side.

A native and life resident of the Syracuse area, Fran was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Clara (Schemel) Scharoun, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Earl Pauls and niece, Kathleen Pauls (Donald) Jeffrey.

In addition to Margaret “Peg” (John) Hoppe, he leaves behind nieces and nephews: Dianne (Joseph) Stefanko, Darleen (David) Scholl, Linda (Barry) Richards, Christine (Pete) Shah, Jeffrey (Ellen) Hoppe, William Hoppe, Karen Hoppe and several great nieces and nephews.

Fran attended Assumption Academy and graduated in 1960 from Central Tech with a concentration in Graphic Arts. Fran proudly served as a Photography Specialist in the NY Air National Guard, 174th Tactical Fighter Group, a/k/a “The Boys from Syracuse” from 1962 until 1995 when he retired with an unforgettable commendation F-16 fighter jet flight.

Fran enjoyed sports and used to be active as a manager and coach for various Little League and CYO Basketball teams. He played in various bowling leagues and once bowled a perfect 300 game.

He was a former communicant of Assumption Church and a devoted member of Christ the King Church where he dedicated many hours of service as an Altar Server, Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

He was a longtime member, Historian and Color Guard member at the Mattydale American Legion Post # 1832.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 9, 2022 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Christ the King Church, 21 Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool, NY


A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Church.

Please note that MASKS will be required for all services due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Rite of Committal and burial will be immediately following in Assumption Cemetery with full military honors.

The family wishes memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post #1832, 2718 Lemoyne Avenue, Mattydale, NY 13211 or Christ the King Church, 21 Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool, NY 13090.
