Obituary for Dolores A. Abt (Schneider)

Dolores A. (Schneider) Abt, 93, of Syracuse died Friday evening, November 18, 2022, at home with family by her bedside. She was a resident of Syracuse’s Northside until early 2020, when the Covid pandemic necessitated her to move to La Fayette, NY to live with her daughter. Dolores was the second daughter of LeRoy and Gertrude (Nicholson) Schneider. A graduate of North High School, Dolores worked for American Telephone and Telegraph Company as an operator before marrying her husband, Edward, and starting a family. While raising seven children, she was a Corporate Officer of the family business, Joseph J. Abt & Son, Inc., in charge of accounts payable and receivable, in addition to selflessly caring for others.

Never one to sit for long, Dolores kept an impeccable home; was a loving wife, devoted mother and grand-mother, role-model and the unwavering support for the family business. She was always looking out for neighbors and friends, taking them to appointments, volunteering at church and her children's school, caring for elderly parents and in-laws, watching her grand-children, traveling with her husband, Eddie, after his retirement, and generally, remaining out of the spotlight. In later years, health issues limited her mobility, but she always enjoyed her grand-children and great-grandchildren.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that the family would like to thank the care-givers who took such good care of her over the years: Tami Hawkins, Ranesha “Duke” Campbell, Sheila Lester, and Philomena Leavett. We never could have kept her in her home, if not for you.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years, Edward C. Abt, Sr., her sister, Eileen Hofmann, and her grand-daughter, Adeline M. Fagan, MD.

She is survived by seven children, Paul Abt of Missouri, Andrew Abt of Fulton, Joseph (Anne Marie) Abt of Syracuse, Edward “Buddy” Abt, Jr. of La Fayette, Mary Jane (Brant) Fagan of La Fayette, Judith Abt of Fulton, and William (Kelleen) Abt of Syracuse; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are Saturday, November 26, 2022 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, 812 N. Salina St, Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00.

Interment will be Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 1:00p.m. in the Chapel at the Onondaga County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Howlett Hill Road.

Keegan-Osbelt-Knight Funeral Home, Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements.
